چکیده
Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) treatment for lymphatic filariasis can be accompanied by adverse drug reactions. Severe adverse reactions are usually uncommon but once happen, they could be acute and sometimes life-threatening. We report here a case of 15-year-old patient who was treated with DEC and developed severe adverse reactions including fever, headache, dizziness, chest pain, sore throat, cough, dyspnea, nausea and vomiting. A complete profile of clinical findings and blood parameters, including parasitological, hematological, biochemical, and immunological parameters was reported. The physical examination showed rhonchi on chest examination. Laboratory investigations revealed leukocytosis with the increased levels of neutrophils and monocytes. The bimodal pattern of eosinophilia was observed. However, there was no remarkable change of the biochemical parameters. We also demonstrate the magnitudes of inflammatory cytokines including interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor–α (TNF-α), and anti-inflammatory cytokine including รายงานผู ป่้วย

Lymph Node Enlargement in Neck Filariasis as a Rare Cause: A Case Report
Lymphatic filariasis is endemic to tropical countries and is the most common cause of acquired lymphedema in the world. Wuchereria bancrofti is the main etiological agent responsible. While the presentation of filariasis in limbs is common, isolated presentation as a single enlarged lymph node in the neck is very rare. We describe a 48-year-old Indian woman, who presented with a hard lymph node...
متن کاملAdverse reactions following mass drug administration with diethylcarbamazine in lymphatic filariasis endemic areas in the Northeast of Brazil.
INTRODUCTION The Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis was launched with the goal of eliminating this disease via the annual mass drug administration (MDA) of a single dose of antifilarial drugs. Adverse drug reactions following MDA are a major factor of poor treatment adherence in several countries. This study assessed the occurrence of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) following the ...
متن کاملA single dose of doxycycline in combination with diethylcarbamazine for treatment of bancroftian filariasis.
Standard treatment of lymphatic filariasis with diethylcarbamazine (DEC) is associated with systemic adverse reactions, thought to be due to the release of microfilariae material and Wolbachia endosymbiotic bacteria into the blood. Combination treatments with doxycycline for 3-8 weeks are more effective than standard treatment. However, long-term use of antibiotics may contribute to drug resist...
متن کاملDeterminants of parasite drug resistance in human lymphatic filariasis.
Infection with filarial nematodes remains endemic in several countries worldwide and some of these infections are commonly associated with severe disease. The elimination of lymphatic filariasis relies on drug administration using the three drugs currently available for treatment: diethylcarbamazine, albendazole, and ivermectin. However, development of drug resistance is a reported phenomenon. ...

The goals of treatment for lymphatic filariasis are: to prevent, reverse, or halt progression of disease; and to interrupt transmission of the parasite. Selecting the appropriate therapy for the patient with lymphatic filariasis requires knowledge of the various clinical features of filarial disease and their pathogenesis. In the past, treatment of lymphatic filariasis has focused primarily on ...
